Zorra Mayor States He Supports Truckers but He Does Not Support the Convoy

Marcus Ryan is the only politician in Oxford County who has put out a statement on the convoy at the municipal, Federal or Provincial level.

ZORRA TOWNSHIP - The Mayor of Zorra Township has voiced his opinion on the truck convoy heading to Ottawa on Saturday.

Marcus Ryan shared his views on his personal Facebook page that is open to the public saying he supports truckers, but he does not support the convoy.

"I support truckers, like everyone else whose worked all through the pandemic.  And trucking is one one of the most important sectors of the Zorra and Oxford economy.  But as far as I can tell this convoy is not broadly representative of truckers. The large associations and many individual truckers are distancing themselves, and many of the organizers and spokespeople of the convoy are not truckers."

Ryan adds that the right to protest is a fundamental part of democracy and a free society, and I take that very seriously.

"So if I take it seriously I should listen to the protesters, and they've gone to some trouble to clearly state their goals. Canada Unity, who claim to be, and many involved reference as being, the organizers say in their own document: “…the Federal Government are to uphold and enforce all Canadian and International Human Rights Laws that are clearly laid out in the MOU or "RESIGN their lawful positions of authority Immediately."

He goes on to say that Canadians have fought and died for their democracy, for their right to free speech and debate, their right to protest, and their right to choose their government.

"We had an election. We chose our government.  Each of us doesn’t always get the government we want, that’s democracy. I do not support an organization actively intent an undemocratic change of government.
So I don't support the convoy headed to Ottawa.  They don't represent truckers, and they don't support democracy."

Ryan finishes his message saying the following:

I do support the truckers serving our farms and businesses every day.
I do support the thousands of healthcare workers looking after us every day.
I do support all the people doing their best to help their communities.

The Mayor is taking some heat on social media for his stance, which was only made public a couple of hours ago. He has shared screen shots of vile language and insults coming his way, demanding that he resign immediately.

Ryan is the only politician in Oxford County who has put out a statement on the convoy at the municipal, Federal or Provincial level. Woodstock Mayor Trevor Birtch indicated his support for the convoy by changing his profile picture, but has not put out any official statement.

Canada's Sargeant at Arms has warned MP's in Ottawa to be on high alert this weekend. The concern is the homes of some MP's could be made public and protesters could arrive at their house.
