27 Fatalities on OPP Patrolled Roads in June Alone

Drivers are being reminded to be careful out on the roads after a particularly deadly month.

Oxford OPP are preaching caution after a deadly month on the roads in Ontario.

27 people have died on OPP patrolled highways this month including a fatal crash in Oxford County on June 4th where a 19 year old crashed into a hydro pole on Cranberry Line. Police are once again urging safe driving after a tragic month and encouraging motorists to give 100% of your focus to the roads.

Constable Lisa Narancsik tells Heart FM the numbers are alarming, "The total for the year up to date is 124 deaths; and again for just part of a month is 27 deaths. Very concerning that we're going into the summer with this. And school is just about to get out as well, so there is going to be a lot more people on the roadways.

Narancsik says police will be out in full force this summer with an extra emphasis on safety. They will be focusing on the four main factors in fatal collisions: distracted driving, impaired driving, speeding and not wearing a seat belt. The OPP encourage passengers to speak up when being driven by someone who is using their cell phone or engaged in some other distracting activity behind the wheel. They are putting your life at risk!

"These senseless road deaths are revealing the same causal factors over and over again. Until all drivers stop speeding, driving impaired or distracted and ensure that everyone in their vehicle is buckled in, history will continue to repeat itself and innocent people will continue to die on our roads," said OPP Deputy Commissioner Brad Blair, Provincial Commander, Traffic Safety and Operational Support.
