3 Way Stop Coming to Meadow Wood Lane and Lakeview

Those that live near the intersection Meadow Wood Lane and Lakeview Drive won't have to worry about excessive speeds in their neighbourhood anymore.

WOODSTOCK -  An entire neighbourhood from the city's north end filled council chambers and heard the news they were hoping for, with the installation of a new 3 way stop sign.  The roads that are located near Cowan Park are getting heavily travelled with more homes being built and speeding has been prominent in that area.  Many ideas were presented to council from dropping the speed limit to constructing a roundabout but council believed the stop signs would be the most cost effective route.  Woodstock City Councillor Shawn Shapton who put the motion forward and has been working on this issue for nearly 2 months is pleased to see a positive end result.  "I brought forward a motion to install a 3 way stop at Meadow Wood Lane and Lakeview based on the hidden intersection there.  It just became a significant safety concern for the residents in that area, I have worked with our police and the engineer and this was really the only way to get it done in an expeditious manner and it was passed."  Chris Carne who presented the issue to council commented that roundabouts are ineffective in built up residential areas claiming they only slow a vehicle down for a brief time.  Carne described the driving style in a roundabout in his area as a slingshot where drivers go as fast as they can once exiting the roundabout.

Visibility impairment combined with speeding has resulted in the city passing a 3 way stop to be placed in the north end after the neighbourhood showed their displeasure.  Shapton explains why the change was necessary and how they came to the decision.  "When you look at the layout of that specific street there are traffic islands, it is very difficult to see when you are making a left hand turn and there is a longer path to make the left.  Just out of safety concerns, and I have been working with residents since the start of May to sort of come up with a solution.  We've looked at many different options and this we feel was the best way to get it done."

After dozens of residents from the area flocked to council Councillor Shapton knows this was the best option for the troubled residents of the area."The most important thing is community safety, and I hope that this will provide an opportunity for someone to really stop and take a look as to what is going on and go from there."  Additional changes may be on the horizon regarding the intersection to provide more visibility but for now council will continue to monitor the issue after the 3 way stop is implemented.
