There were plenty of smiles and excitement inside of a brand new school today. About 580 students from 6 public schools from around the Oxford County are settling in to the new 'Laurie Hawkins' Public School. Principal Lisa D'Ambrose says students spent the day acquainting themselves with new classrooms, a music room and a host of other learning amenities - including, of course, places to unwind and have fun "we have two gyms - a large gym as well as an activity room and we also have a wonderful playground. Because we are located near this great park in Ingersoll, we have access to soccer fields and baseball fields and also a great deal of playground equipment". Learning Support Teacher Sabrina Smith says she's teaching literacy to her students (who range in age from 3-5) with I-Pod technology that has already proven to be very receptive " It just seems like second nature to them. They pick up the I-Pods and know exactly what to do, so it's now bringing that second step towards them with that oral language piece". Smith says the I-Pod lab was brought on by the TVDSB and the Ministry of Education.
