72 Acres Now Open To The Public

A new conservation area has opened up to the public in the Township of Perth South.

PERTH SOUTH - The Upper Thames Conservation Authority is ready to show off their latest land acquisition.

The Cade Tract was donated to the Conservation Authority by Barnby Cade and his family in 2016. The 72 acres of land is now open to the public for hiking and a controlled deer hunt every December. A large sign listing the permitted activities has been installed at the public access point at the south end of the property. These activities are similar to other UTRCA rural properties.

Terrestrial Biologist at the UTRCA Cathy Quinlan says they are really excited to share this land with everyone.

"The Cade Tract includes floodplain meadows along the Sommerville Drain, a mature maple woodlot, and a hawthorn thicket on the valley slope. In 2007, we worked with the landowner to remove a small dam and reservoir to improve the watercourse, which has some cold water stream characteristics."

Barnby had allowed people to use his property over the years, so the public will be pleased to be able to walk the land again and view the wildlife that will certainly move in as the UTRCA naturalizes the property. Perth County has the lowest vegetation cover in the Upper Thames watershed, owing to its strong agricultural land use. This property offers a great opportunity to bring a little more nature back to the region.

The property is located west of the Town of St. Marys, at 4695 Perth Road Line 5, Granton, Ontario.
