Woodstock City Council is set to approve the 2023 Capital Budget and discuss a motion to reinstate the downtown benches and picnic tables tonight.
WOODSTOCK - It's going to be a long night for Woodstock City Council.
The agenda for tonight's meeting is close to 400 pages and it includes the approval of a more than $31-million Capital Budget for 2023.
Councillor Kate Leatherbarrow's motion regarding the downtown benches and picnic tables will also be on the floor for discussion. She would like to reinstate the benches in Museum Square immediately and bring back all remaining benches and picnic tables in the downtown core in the spring.
Council will hear two delegations from local business owners on the matter. The delegation from Fadel Zabian will request that council defers this motion, to allow for further consultation with local business owners. The delegation from Arnold Spina appears to be against Leatherbarrow's motion. In his delegation form, Spina says he has seen an improvement in the downtown core and he also calls for a long-term solution.
Wes Mazur, another local business owner, has put together his own petition in favour of reinstating the benches and picnic tables. You can view his petition online here.
Tonight's meeting will be taking place at City Hall with a 7:00 p.m. start time. Members of the public will be able to attend in person or they can live stream the meeting on the City of Woodstock YouTube page.
