A memorial service was held in Woodstock to honour a fallen firefighter who served with the Woodstock Fire Department.
WOODSTOCK - It was a special moment for the Woodstock Fire Department.
A former firefighter was honoured for their service after passing away. Woodstock Fire Chief Jeff Slager explains.
"Alan Cullen was a firefighter whom we recognized this past weekend. He joined the Woodstock Fire Department in 1963, and he served with us until 1990 when he retired. He was a captain in our fire suppression division at that time."
Slager says Cullen was diagnosed with cancer and passed away in 2009. Cullen's family was able to submit a claim to WSIB, which was approved, stating his illness was caused by exposure to hazardous chemicals as a firefighter. Cullen's name is on the local memorial, along with the Federal Firefighters memorial in Ottawa, the International memorial in Colorado Springs and the Provincial memorial in Toronto. Slager mentions the local memorial is located near the flagpoles at the headquarters on Parkinson Road.
"You don't need to come into the hall to be able to see it. That was one of the parameters we wanted to have is that families don't have to feel they're interfering. If they want to come out, take an etching of a name or just spend some time there, they're more than welcome to."
The memorial service for Cullen was held on Saturday, October 17th.
