A motion to increase the speed limits on County roads in Oxford was possibly miscounted at the last meeting. Warden Larry Martin recorded the vote as 5-5, however the tape appears to show it was really a 6-4 vote.
OXFORD COUNTY - A motion to increase the speed limits on County roads in Oxford was miscounted at the last meeting.
The motion asked to increase the speed limits from 50 km/h to 60 km/h for Beachville, Hickson, Oxford Road 2 (west of Woodstock) and Oxford Road 59 (between Oxford Road 17 and Oxford Road 33). Warden Larry Martin recorded the vote as 5-5, however the video shows that it should have been recorded as 6-4 vote. The mistake was caught by councillor Deb Tait and a local resident Matt Davidson who contacted the County. Interim CAO Larry McCabe says they have gone over the tapes from the virtual meeting and there was a mistake.
"The vote was called, sometimes it is difficult, the virtual meetings have been working very well, accept sometimes maybe a hand doesn't go high enough and it was called by the Warden as 5-5. Staff have reviewed the tape and it appears it might have been 6-4 vote. We will put that back on the agenda under unfinished business. The effect of a 6-4 vote would mean the speed limit would remain at 50 km/h on that road. Other things happened in the report and clarification will sought at the next meeting of August 12th of County Council."
By moving this to unfinished business, it means things will stay the same until that clarification is sought at County Council and they will likely have another vote on the matter.
