The Alzheimer's Society of Oxford is looking for a few Good Samaritans to sign up for their Volunteer Companion Program.
OXFORD COUNTY - It's been described as a rewarding and fulfilling experience on both ends.
The Alzheimer's Society of Oxford is looking for a few Good Samaritans to sign up for their Volunteer Companion Program.
Executive Director Shelley Green says each participant will receive training before they are partnered up with a local Alzheimer's or dementia patient.
"Our volunteers go and visit once a week for a minimum of two hours. During those two hours our volunteers and their match, their friend with Alzheimer's or dementia will do things that really just meet the interests of the person with the diagnosis."
This could be a simple card game or a drive through town. During this time the volunteer will give the patients primary caregivers a bit of a break as well.
Green says anyone interested in dedicating their time can give them a call at 1-877-594-2368.
"By calling us it in no way obligates them to get involved with the Volunteer Companion Program. We recognize that some people may be somewhat apprehensive, we're here to answer their questions and to hopefully put their minds at ease so they can become a part of the program."
