County staff have made some changes to the Woodlands Conservation bylaw, addressing three concerns brought up at public meetings.
OXFORD COUNTY - County staff have made some adjustments to the Woodlands Conservation bylaw, after a first draft underwent a public review.
The bylaw is meant to prevent the mass destruction of woodlots in Oxford County.
Warden David Mayberry says approximately 70 to 80 people attended multiple public meetings in order to voice their thoughts.
"People are concerned about it, they don't want to break the law but they don't want laws that seem unfair or harsh either. I think that's what we're trying to strive for is to have a rule that protects the natural resource in the community but also doesn't infringe too much on the rights on individual land owners."
The updated version will address three issues brought up at the meetings.
The first adjustment will look at fence lines and individual trees that can't be removed. Mayberry says the second alteration will also focus on trees.
"Another area was around what farmers and a lot of land owners would call nuisance trees; the sumacs that grow up along the edge of the bush that theoretically you're not supposed to remove and how do we deal with that."
The second draft will also address how the county plans on enforcing the bylaw in a way that's fair for everyone.
The updated bylaw will go out for another public review, before it comes back to council in 2018.
