Attack Midgets Take Gold at OBA Championships

The Oxford Attack Under 16 Major Midget Boys competitive basketball team won a gold medal in Division 9 at the Ontario Basketball Association Provincial Championships in Ottawa. The Attack began their tournament in pool play versus the Ancaster Magic and came out on top of a 57 ? 44 score. The Attack used their superior size to out rebound the smaller Magic team. The Attack next faced the Peterborough Power in a close hard fought game in which the Power nipped the Attack 40 ? 39 thanks in part to some timely last minute 3-point shooting by Power?s point guard. The Attack completed their pool versus the York Stingers #2 and needed a wide margin of victory to ensure their plus / minus rating would vault them into the medal round because 3 teams finished pool play with 2-1 records. The Attack easily defeated the Stingers 58 ? 22 to finish first in their pool. The Attack began medal round play versus their early season nemesis, the Mississauga Monarchs #3, who defeated the Attack by a wide margin on 3 separate occasions. The Monarch?s full court press had stymied the Attack each time they had played them. The Attack?s 2-3 zone defense was dominant early on in the game allowing only one point by the Monarch?s in the first quarter. The Attack solved the Monarch?s full court press with help from Ian Wilson who took over point guard responsibilities and advanced the ball to open teammates for easy layups. The Attack continued to dominate and led 29 ? 8 by a half and finished the game strong defeating the Monarch?s 59 ? 29. This was the best defensive and press break performance the Attack had demonstrated all season long. The Attack U16?s rode their semi-final momentum into the final game versus the Hamilton Wildcats #1 team. The Wildcats used accurate 3-point shooting and their solid full court press to advance to the gold medal game. The Attack game planned to extend their 2-3 zone to stop the Wildcat shooters and implemented their new press break to advance the ball and attack the rim. The Attack led by 6 to 8 points throughout the first half. The Wildcats took a narrow 37-36 lead midway through the 3rd quarter as their 3-point shooting began to connect. If the final quarter, the Attack defense clamped down and the Attack finished strong en route to a solid 63 ? 42 victory and a gold medal for this brand new Attack team. Josh Hounsell led the Attack with 19 points in the final; he garnered numerous rebounds and played great wing defense against the Wildcat shooters. The Oxford Attack player of the tournament was their team captain, Nick Campbell, who dominated offensively and defensively from his centre position all tournament long but also played with poise and passion that was transferred to his teammates for the ultimate team win; a provincial gold medal.
