New gov't fund looks to help teachers improve their math teaching skills.
Do math teachers need to go back to class? They'll have a chance to under a new government program.
Today, Ontario Education Minister Liz Sandals announced a new $4-million fund to help teachers fund courses to upgrade their math skills.
It's in an effort to help improve student test scores, which are struggling to meet provincial standards at some levels. EQAO (Education and Accountability Office) scores show almost one in five Grade 6 students are not meeting the provincial standard in mathematics. 57% of Grade 6 students and 67% of Grade 2's met the provincial standard this year.
While Sandals says teachers don't need to have a degree in math, she suggests some may need to learn how to teach the subject better.
