If you like to have bonfires, and live in Woodstock, be prepared to pay for the privilege. An open-air burning by-law is being proposed that would see city residents charged $50 for a permit, and $30 per year after that. In the past, all that was needed was an on-site inspection from the Woodstock Fire Department. That came at no cost. But the new by-law would help pay for the on-site inspections, and an "educational discussion". The Fire Department calculates under the current number of permits, it would collect $39,000 the first year, and over $23,000 a year after that. The proposed by-law comes to council Thursday night.
