Rabies Positive Bat in Norwich Township

Someone in Norwich Township is now receiving post-rabies prophylaxis after they were bit by a bat that was infected by the virus.

NORWICH TOWNSHIP - A bat has tested positive for rabies in Norwich Township.

According to Southwestern Public Health, the bat was sent for testing after it bit someone. That person is now receiving rabies post-exposure treatment so they don't contract the virus.

The health unit is now reminding everyone to stay away from wild animals especially those that appear sick and those that are oddly or aggressively. Parents should always supervise their kids around animals, and tell them to stay away from wild animals or strange dogs/cats.

You should also make sure your pets are up to date on their rabies vaccines and keep them indoors at night. If you find any wounds on your pet that could have been caused by a wild animal, you should contact your vet.

If a bat ends up in your home, you should never handle it directly. Southwestern Public Health says you should contact your local wildlife rescue if you have any further questions regarding bat removal.

Amy Pavletic, the Program Manager for Environmental Health for SWPH, explains what you should do if you are ever injured by an animal.

“If you have been bitten or scratched by an animal, the first step is to wash the wound right away with soap and water. The second step is to seek medical attention. The third step is to report all animal bites to your local public health unit so that we can investigate and assess the risk of rabies transmission.”
