Beachville Cenotaph Salvaged

A cenotaph in Beachville has been saved. The monument was located at the former Beachville Public School. President of the Beachville Royal Canadian Legion Raymond Thornton says a big concern was raised with what was going to happen with it now that the school is for sale. "A lot of people were really concerned that these would just end up being scrap. The school had offered to donate it back to the legion, so today (Wednesday) we created a ceremony to make it a special day that we've gotten them back and a lot of people that have been concerned are very happy now," said Thornton. Two plaques (in photo on left) have been cut from the cenotaph, which will be moved to the Legion (in photo on right). "People had said that we could mount them on the side of the building or build another structure that they could be contained in so that we could locate them back at the branch somewhere. We want to put them up so that they're safe, but open so that people can see them," said Thornton. Members have not yet decided exactly where they'll be located at their building.
