Over 100 people donated to the Oxford County Animal Rescue on Monday for the #BettyWhiteChallenge, resulting in about $6,500 in donations.
OXFORD COUNTY - Lots of people stepped up to donate to their favourite animal rescue or humane society on Monday, in honour of what would have been Betty White's 100th birthday.
The #BettyWhiteChallenge blew up over social media in memory of the former Golden Girl and animal lover who passed away last month.
Anna Holmes with the Oxford County Animal Rescue had lots of people asking her about the challenge beforehand.
"We got a lot of messages through Facebook and through e-mail asking if we were going to do something with it, so we figured we'd see how it goes and oh my gosh I was blown away!"
Over 100 people, organizations and businesses donated to the Oxford County Animal Rescue in the end, resulting in over $6,500 raised.
The local rescue is currently caring for 50 animals; one dog and 49 cats and kittens. Holmes says money raised through the #BettyWhiteChallenge will go towards their vet bills.
"Of course vetting is our number one expense. Each kitten, whenever they come in healthy to us, it's a $200 vet bill right there."
The money raised will also help pay for the animals everyday needs such as food.
The Oxford County Animal Rescue completely relies on donations from the public. Those interested in donating can do so online here or you can send a cheque to their Woodstock office (622 Dundas Street, Box 406, Woodstock, Ontario, N4S 1E2).
The #BettyWhiteChallenge was a huge success across Ontario. The Ontario SPCA and Humane Society received over $120,000 in donations and the Humane Society of Kitchener Waterloo and Stratford Perth collected over $30,000.
We are overwhelmed by the generosity of everyone who donated to animals in our care through the #BettyWhiteChallenge yesterday. More than $120,000 was donated! You can send your special Betty White eCard here! https://t.co/lOIUsvC23Y pic.twitter.com/lOWex0nvMA
