The Brant OPP is investigating after someone lost $1,900 through an ad on Facebook Marketplace.
BRANT - One person out over $1,900 after trying to buy a camera through Facebook Marketplace.
According to the Brant OPP, the seller cut off all contact and deleted the advertisement after they received an etransfer from the victim.
After further investigation, police now believe this person was using a fake identity in order to trick the them.
To prevent ending up in a situation like this, police say you should always meet in a safe public space when buying something through an online marketplace. You should use secure payment methods that offer buyer protection, but never send money before you actually receive the item your buying.
You should always verify the sellers identity, especially if the account was recently created. It's also important to note that if the deal seems too good to be true, it probably is.
