Beware "Ransomware"

New computer virus circulating takes over your files and forces you to pay to get them back

A new and nasty Internet virus is making the rounds, and holds your files for ransom.

The virus is known as "Cryptolocker" - and once your computer is infected it encrypts you files, preventing you from accessing them.

The only way you can get the files back is by purchasing an encryption key, which costs hundreds of dollars.

The virus has shown up on some local computers taken into PC Options for repairs.  Owner Mike Rozand says they can remove the infecting software, there's nothing they can do to unencrypted your files.

Rozand tells us about the other troublesome issue with this virus.  "The unique thing about this one is you are required to purchase 'bitcoins' - which is an on-line currency, and then transfer these bitcoins to these people that are holding you ransom.  The problem there is, now that you've purchased these bitcoins, you have no recourse with your credit card company to get your money back."

Rozand says the virus comes in through e-mail attachments.  He says avoid opening attachments you're not familiar with.  "Someone will get an e-mail saying it's your boarding pass, or there's been changes to an itinerary, or there's a FedEx package for you to be picked up, or it's a greeting card, and as soon as you open it, you're infected immediately."

Rozand also recommends regularly backing up your files so if they do become encrypted, you still have them.
