It's Big Brothers Big Sisters Month, and the local Oxford chapter is looking to shine a light on the importance of it's youth mentorship programs.
OXFORD COUNTY - September is Big Brothers Big Sisters Month.
Locally, the Oxford chapter will be celebrating by asking everyone to learn about the importance Big Brother Big Sisters has in the community. Executive Director Kristen Ralph says their vision is to make sure every child reaches their full potential.
"We do that by enabling life changing mentoring relationships that ignite the power and potential of our young people. Kids involved in our program are not going to get a one-size fits all mentoring experience. We work with families and children to find out what they need specifically in a mentor to fit their needs and train that mentor accordingly."
Ralph says they're very grateful for community support for their programs.
"Our community provides incredible support through both time and money to support the young people in Oxford County. As an agency, not only are we providing young people with a positive mentor, but relationships, activities and supports are individualized to the interests and needs of each young person. Every child and youth deserves the opportunity to realize their full potential.”
This year they have served over 400 children through a variety of programs. They have 107 kids on a wait list looking for a Big Brother or Big Sister. This means they really need some more volunteers to step and be a mentor. Ralph says the mentors often get a lot out of these relationships.
"So the number one thing that we hear from our mentors, is they are getting just as much out of it as our young people, so they get to kind of relive their childhood."
