Could a bingo parlour thrive in Woodstock? One man who's deep in the industry believes it can. Robert Dowd, the former owner of the Silver Dollar Bingo that closed a few years ago is taking another crack at running regular bingo in Woodstock. Dowd also owns and operates bingo halls in Chatham and Leamington. Dowd has acquired the former Home Hardware on Springbank, which he's renovating for a bingo parlour and says it's all about location. "It's a market that has no bingo. Given the location, it should do quite well in Woodstock. We want to renovate it all and make it look nice. It's not a huge location, it's 8-thousand square feet. We want to make it a cozy atmosphere and a fun atmosphere." Dowd is incorrect when he says Woodstock currently doesn't have bingo. The Woodstock Legion currently hosts a bingo on Thursday nights, run by the Woodstock Lions Club. Dowd is applying for a bingo license through the Ontario Liquor and Gaming Commission. If he's granted a license, he'll need city council's approval, and also a registered charity, or charities, to contribute some of the proceeds. Interested groups can reach Dowd at rdowd@sbgamingsystems.com or by phone at 519-351-3791.
