The Fire Department put the ban into effect due to extreme heat warnings. Larger fires that occur in rural areas will not be allowed but campfires are permitted.
EAST ZORRA-TAVISTOCK - A burn ban is in effect in East Zorra-Tavistock. The Fire Department put the ban into effect last Thursday and it is for controlled burns due to extreme heat warnings.
Fire Chief Scott Alexander says the ban is in place so the firefighters' health are not at risk.
"We've always made it a standard practice whenever there is a weather warning of any kind out there, that we do everything we can to prevent a fire department from having to go out and deal with fires. In a case like this with extreme heat, if the guys were called out to fire that got out of control, we're putting them at risk. So we choose not to push the limits at all for their safety and quite honestly when you get to heat like this, it's really not a great situation to have the excess smoke and the environment either."
Barbecues and campfires are allowed at this time. However, Alexander says they will not allow larger fires to occur in rural areas. "We're really concerned with the length of the heat wave that we're having right now and the effect that it's going to have on the community, and drying everything out quite honestly. It will definitely be in effect until the heat warnings are lifted and then we'll look at that time to see whether or not the dry conditions would warrant extending it past that."
