CAMI employees voted 91% in favour of a new collective bargaining agreement today that will see GM Canada move forward with a $1 Billion investment to build electric commercial vans in Ingersoll.
INGERSOLL - GM Canada will move forward with a $1 Billion investment at the CAMI plant in Ingersoll to start building electric commercial vans.
A tentative agreement between Unifor and GM was announced last Friday that was contingent on a ratification vote. Plant Chair Mike Van Boekel says the ratification vote happened this morning.
"We voted 91% in favour of the new collective agreement, which is fantastic, it really centred around the $1 Billion investment and it will be the first mass produced electric vehicles in Canada."
Van Boekel says production of the Equinox will eventually be phased out at CAMI.
"We are currently building the Equinox and will continue to build those for a couple of years yet, however it will be phased out and we will start building the new electric vehicles immediately, we hope to have the first ones off the line in November of this year."
Van Boekel says if this deal didn't get ratified, it's fair to say that the future of the plant would have been in jeopardy. He says they expect to keep their entire workforce on with this new deal.
"It does take a lot less people to build electric vehicles, however our vehicle that we are going to build is going to be the largest one that GM has ever made. It's very high intense labour and they are expecting us to retain our entire work force and they actually think we might be hiring by the 4th quarter of 2023 or the first quarter of 2024."
Van Boekel says this is fantastic news for the community.
