CAMI Protest

Workers walked off the job after union leader ejected.

INGERSOLL- CAMI assembly workers refused to work after a local Unifor leader was forced to leave yesterday. Reports suggest Unifor Local 88 Chair Mike Van Boekel got into an argument early in the morning with managers at the plant, CAMI management then told Van Boekel and another union representative to leave the premises. The argument apparently stemming from a concern raised by Van Boekel to plant managers.

The displeasure of having their union representatives kicked out resulted in a protest among the assembly workers who left the building at 3 p.m. The matter was dealt with quickly and workers returned to the line around 7:30 p.m. Van Boekel reportedly declined to comment as part of the resolution. Media were not permitted to enter the property and were told by security that GM Canada would be issuing a release.

According to a media report, security guards kept media from entering the property, saying GM Canada would issue a news release.
