Oxford County Public Health is putting out a friendly reminder regarding the new smoking laws as we get set for a busy summer outdoors.
Since January 1st it has been illegal to smoke on provincial/municipal owned land. You also can't smoke at sporting events, fairs, festivals community events where food and drink are sold and on restaurant patios. Tobacco Control Coordinator with Oxford Public Health Gemma Urbani tells Heart FM the new laws are part of the smoke free Ontario act. She adds the whole idea behind the new laws is protection and to limit the exposure of second hand smoke to the general public. Ontario has set out a goal to have the lowest smoking rate in Canada.
No smoking signs have already been posted across the County and more are coming from the Province. Anyone who breaks the act could get hit with a $305 for a first offence and corporations will get hit with a substantially stiffer fine.
