Celebrations will be taking place in London and Brantford in honour of National Indigenous Peoples Day. You can also check out the new Indigenous crosswalk on King Street in Ingersoll.
INGERSOLL - Indigenous history is very important to Canadian culture and a good way to celebrate is by taking part in Indigenous Peoples Day.
There are two major indigenous events happening today, such as the London celebration at The Green in Wortley Village 206-226 London, featuring a Sunrise Ceremony, Singers, Dancers, food, Vendors, Community Service Providers, from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. the Woodland Cultural Centre at 184 Mohawk St in Brantford featuring traditional crafts all day, a barbecue starting at 12:00 p.m. and several guided tours of the museum.
Here in Oxford County, the Ingersoll BIA recently decided to partner with the Ingersoll and Area Indigenous Solidarity & Awareness Network to install an Indigenous crosswalk. The crosswalk on King Street includes the colours blue, orange, and red
Cooperative Organizer at IISAN, Patricia Marshall tells us about the significance of the colours.
"We discussed with them about going with the three colours of red blue and orange. The blue is to represent the disproportionate lack of resources in indigenous communities, which would include water, high school education, and medical care. The orange is to represent all families and children affected by the Indian residential school system, the sixties scoop, and the millennial scoop. And the red is to represent an honour murdered and missing Indigenous women girls and Two Spirit people, which is an issue that is older than this country and still ongoing."
Marshall stopped by the Heart FM studio to chat with Dan and Marcie on Tuesday June 20th and you can listen to the full interview below:
