Former Quebec Premier Jean Charest officially entered federal Conservative leadership race last night.
CALGARY - Jean Charest is looking to return to federal politics.
He officially launched his bid to become the next leader of the federal Conservative Party in Calgary last night. He said the party has spent the past few years "fractured" and "badly distracted."
Charest was first elected as an MP back in 1984, under Brian Mulroney's Conservative Government. He became a cabinet minister before turning 30-years-old and went on to serve as the federal Conservative Party's leader from 1993 to 1998.
Charest eventually decided to leave federal politics in order to lead Quebec's Liberal Party. He also served as the Premier of Quebec from 2003 until 2012, when he was defeated in an election.
