In a battle between a skateboard and a landscaping stone, no one wins. That's the result of the melee that took place 2-weeks ago on Sydenham St. in Woodstock. The case has finally culminated in charges against a 14-year-old boy, for allegedly hitting a 46-year-old man with a skateboard. But the victim of that assault, Phillip Hilliard, has also been charged. Hilliard is charged with assault with a weapon for allegedly wielding a landscaping stone at a group of teens. The 14-year-old is charged with assault causing bodily harm for the skateboard attack that landed Hilliard in hospital with a serious head injury. He was released a few days later. Woodstock Police Constable Steve McEwen on why it took police two weeks to press charges. "There was a number of people involved in the incident, so investigators had to locate the witnesses and get statements from them in order to proceed with charges." Hilliard's wife, Cindy, told Heart FM that Phillip was defending his daughters from the group of teens. In subsequent days, Heart FM received a number of messages from people claiming to have seen the incident, but didn't want to go on the record. They described Hilliard and his family threatening the teens with garden tools, including the aforementioned landscaping stone. Constable McEwen says if there's one message to be taken away from the case, it's this: "If people do have a dispute with neighbours, and they don't feel then can resolve it, they need to get in touch with police and hopefully the police can assist...so it doesn't result in something we just investigated recently."
