Charity Ball Focuses on Youth this Year

The Lights and Sirens Charity Ball keeps giving more to the community. The third annual event raised the highest amount yet. Two local charities were thrilled to each receive a $20,000 dollar donation. This year they supported youth-based charities: the WDDS summer camp program and the Oxford County School Nutrition Partnership. "I think a lot of it has to do with the charities that we support. People see the charities, especially when it has to do with children and they want to help support the kids in the area," said Chair of the Charity Ball Committee Constable Steve Berkeley. Lynda Metcalfe with the nutrition program said the money comes at a time when they need it most. "The cost of food is rising and our grants were cut. So it meant struggle for all of the schools to meet their food costs. So this is going to make up for it and help schools to provide proper and nutritious food for students to learn," said Metcalfe. Deb Roloson with WDDS says the donation will go towards their youth summer camp. "It really is going to make a big difference for the young people in our community that have developmental disabilities that are looking for a camp program," said Roloson, "I can't say enough good things about this committee and how hard they work to make this happen. They're just a great bunch of people that are really dedicated to this cause." The fundraiser has given over $100,000 to local charities over 3 years which include the United Way of Oxford, Sakura House, the Make-A-Wish Foundation, and Operation Sharing.
