In a matter of only a few minutes, the heat of a parked car in the summer sun can be fatal to children and animals.
The thought of kids or pets left in cars during the summer gets many people hot under the collar.
Public Health Nurse with Oxford County Public Health Lorna Boratto says it does not take long for a vehicle to heat up to a dangerous level. "Even within 10 minutes the heat in the car can become lethal. And so you're looking at only 72 degrees which is what, 21 degrees centigrade - so if you're in a hot day it would only be a matter of a very few minutes."
Cracking the window open does not alleviate the heat. Boratto suggests if you are going somewhere that does not allow pets inside, do not take them with you.
Boratto says sometimes parents simply forget children in the backseat. She suggests coming up with a strategy to remind you of your precious cargo: "Some people will have a stuffed animal, for example, that they have in the seat. And when the child's in the seat the stuffed animal is beside them so it's visible. Because with the child in a rear-facing seat and they're asleep, sometimes they are forgotten. So somehow you've got to have a system to remember to always check.
