As electric vehicles become more popular, a charge station could be on the way for Woodstock. Chief Administrative Officer David Creery brought up the idea at the last City Council meeting stating the industry is encouraging Woodstock to get an electric charge station due to the City's proximity to London, Brantford and its place along the highway. Creery says there two potential sites associated with the City's current Ontario Power Authority solar projects that are being looked at for the station, one at the community complex and one at Cowan Park. "We're probably more interested in locating one downtown just as an attraction feature to bring people downtown because as these vehicles come to charge it takes an hour or two hours to top up their battery so it could be a tool to bring people to the downtown and spend sometime." Creery says the cost of the actual charge unit would be about four thousand dollars but the cost to connect is a big unknown at this point. "If it's part of a solar installation, then we are doing work anyways and the incremental costs aren't as significant. If you're just connecting it to the grid, it depends whether or not your connections are underground or over head so there can be a wide variation depending on where you locate these things so it's going to take sometime to look at what the options are." Creery says at this point, most places don't charge vehicle owners to connect to the station. "A hotel will install a charge point in hopes of attracting a customer who needs that charge over night. Eventually as the number of electric vehicles increases in the market place and the need for the charge points increases there will be a business case to be made for these and eventually hydro will be sold for charges." No timeline was given for when a charge station could become reality in Woodstock.
