The City will soon take your electronic waste all year round. This comes after council voted Thursday to enter into a contract with a yet to be determined electronic waste collection service, to have a permanent drop off location at the City's yard on James Street. Items such as computers, telephones and cells phones would be collected. The proposed contract is with Ontario Electronic Stewardship, who is offering to set up a permanent bin in the city's works yard. The city would collect approximately $3-4-thousand a year from the waste. However, City Councillor Paul Plant wants the city to 'shop around' for a better deal, if there's one to be had. City Engineer Harold de Haan says the permanent depot means residents no longer have to wait until May or September to recycle the items or force them to drive to the landfill in Salford. "We're trying to make the whole recycling thing more user friendly, and trying to increase our diversion rate. We suspect that we're losing some diversion because we're only open twice a year (for electronic and hazardous household waste) people either throw it in the garbage or dispose of it other ways they shouldn't be." The next electronic and household waste drop off will be May 4th, and de Haan hopes a permanent electronic waste depot will be set up a month or two after that.
