Acting Mayor Connie Lauder has issued a statement on behalf of Woodstock City council regarding allegations against Mayor Trevor Birtch.
The City of Woodstock has released a statement regarding the criminal charges against Mayor Trevor Birtch.
In an email to Heart FM, acting Mayor Connie Lauder stated the following:
"Woodstock City Council is aware of media reports indicating that Mayor Trevor Birtch has been charged for alleged serious personal actions. This is a matter for Mayor Birtch to respond to through the court proceedings. Under our system of justice an accused receives the benefit of doubt unless and until convicted. There is no requirement under the Municipal Act for an accused elected official to step down from service. City services will continue without impact throughout this process."
Lauder was elected acting mayor by council in January. She is the one releasing this statement, because the Mayor cannot issue a statement on behalf of the City when it is about him.
Trevor Birtch is and will continue to be the Mayor of Woodstock unless he chooses to resign. He has not released any kind of statement since the criminal charges were brought forward. Birtch has been charged with assault, sexual assault and sexual assault with choking.
He is expected to take his seat at the next Oxford County council meeting on Wednesday morning at 9:30 am.
