The flags outside Woodstock City Hall have been lowered in memory of former City Councillor Ross Gerrie.
WOODSTOCK - The City of Woodstock is mourning the loss of Glen "Ross" Gerrie.
He passed away yesterday following a cancer battle. He was only a few days away from celebrating his 69th birthday on March 25th.
Gerrie served on City Council from 2006 to 2010 but his community involvement didn't stop there. Gerrie was also President of Unifor Local 636 for 27 years and a Board Member of the Woodstock Non-Profit Housing Corporation. He volunteered for several local organizations over the years, including United Way Oxford where he served as President for one term.
On top of all of this, Gerrie worked as a millwright at TRW (Kelsey-Hayes) for 44 years before he retired in 2017.
Gerrie ran for re-election in 2018 and although he was unsuccessful, Councillor Deb Tait says that didn't stop him from doing whatever he could to help the Friendly City.
"After the last election, when he wasn't successful, he said to myself and Councillor Lauder 'where do you need me? Where do you want me to apply for the City? I can always help with committees.' So he's always been very committed to the community."
Woodstock City Councillor Connie Lauder describes Gerrie as a fantastic person and a deep thinker.
"Everyone else might have their say and then all of a sudden Ross would come up with something else that we didn't think of. We really appreciated that about Ross and he just did so much for people within in our community. People who were down on their luck on things, he was just a person who was caring, always had a great smile and you always knew that Ross would be behind you in anything you did."
The flag outside City Hall has been lowered in his memory.
A private family interment service will be taking place at the Ingersoll Rural Cemetery. The family is hoping to have a Celebration of Life service in the late spring or early summer depending on COVID-19 restrictions.
