Woodstock City council has contracted the help of Quantum Murray in case of a hazardous materials accident.
WOODSTOCK - Extra help has been brought in for the City of Woodstock should a disaster arise as the result of a hazardous materials accident.
Woodstock City council has contracted the help of Quantum Murray, a company that provides emergency response resources such as environmental remediation and hazardous materials abatement. According to Woodstock Fire Chief Scott Tegler contracting the help of Quantum Murray will help fill gaps in emergency response resources for the City.
"We can contract them to come in and assist us in those types of situations because there are always elements of those dangerous goods. Plus they deal with a number of other environmental issues. It's our priority and my priority as fire chief to ensure the safety of the citizens in our community."
Tegler says because of the broad range of hazardous materials that include anything from flammable liquid to noxious gases, it is difficult to prepare for every type of disaster.
Woodstock is a prime location for a hazardous material accident. The city is sandwiched between the the highway 401/403 corridor and CPR and CN Rail lines. According to the Woodstock Fire Department an estimated 95% of hazardous materials are transported by road and rail. Although the 1992 Transportation of Dangerous Goods Act requires shippers and manufacturers to provide an emergency response plan, there can be circumstances when they may not be equipped to deal with the situation.
