The former Reg Hall department store is now a taxpayer-owned piece of downtown property. The city has taken possession of the 3-storey building, right across from city hall in a tax possession takeover. Over 300-thousand dollars was owed in back taxes. Now the city must undertake an engineering study on the structure, and other elements, according to Mayor Pat Sobeski. He wasn't sure how much that might cost. "It's far, far to early to do that. They (city staff) did a quick walk-thru but you have to bring in a professional engineer that can look at what the asbestos content is. So it's far too premature to even speculate." Sobeski says after an initial inspection by staff, he said of the building's condition - "It's not too bad". The city previously spent 100-thousand dollars fixing the building when the back half collapsed. Sobeski says it will be 6-9-months down the road before they know what kind of work needs to be done, and then the city can start to consider future options for it. It was previously Reg Hall's Department store, and an office products store until 2004. It's been vacant ever since.
