OXFORD COUNTY - The Oxford County New Democratic Party has selected its candidate for the upcoming by-election.
Cody Groat will be running for NDP Member of Parliament when Oxford County heads to the polls in a few months.
Cody has lived in Oxford County since he was 8 years old. He is a proud Kanyen’kehaka (Mohawk) citizen and band member of Six Nations of the Grand River Reserve. He is also the Assistant Professor in the Department of History and the Indigenous Studies Program at Western University.
In a media press release by the NDP, Cody expressed his excitement about being selected for the role.
"I am excited for this opportunity to reflect diverse and progressive ideas within our community. My familiarity with the county combined with my passion for championing social issues and environmental stewardship make me well-positioned to improve the lives of Oxford residents through a bipartisan approach that celebrates the strengths of coming together."
Voting for the spot took place last night. Groat was running against one other candidate, Matthew Chambers, who has expressed his full support for his longtime friend.
This is local democracy at work. Throughout this nomination race, we set out to differentiate ourselves from the divisive and fractured display from the Conservative Party. We based our nomination race on mutual respect and good sportsmanship.
