Homeowners living in Blandford-Blenheim, East Zorra-Tavistock, Norwich, South-West Oxford, and Zorra can now have additional residential units on their properties.
OXFORD COUNTY - Oxford’s rural townships are now eligible to create additional residential units on private property.
The discussion was put on hold in October, due to the More Homes Built Faster Act passed by the Ford Government. County Council agreed that they can no longer wait for provincial funding to arrive. Council approved the decision at Wednesday's council meeting.
The new rules will not only give residents an option to add up to three legal rental units to their homes but they will also be able to apply for funding to help make the changes. The My Second Unit grant will give people the support they need to make renovations that comply with building codes.
Warden Marcus Ryan expresses hope that these two programs will work together to help with housing issues.
"The intention is that these things will work together. [It] will go to a place where somebody is maybe couch surfing somewhere, and the person who owns the property doesn't have the money to renovate. Well now not only is it legal, but they might be able to get some money to renovate it. Turn it into a unit where someone can live with their independence, and the person who owns the property can charge rent to cover costs of having the unit."
