Oxford County council passed the new policy after a delegation from OPAL alliance.
OXFORD COUNTY - Oxford County Council has adopted a new policy on how they treat hauled liquid waste at the County wastewater treatment plants.
The policy sets out criteria for accepting hauled waste and requires agreements with large volume haulers. They made this policy in response to a delegation from the Oxford People Against Landfill or OPAL alliance last year.
Director of Public Works Robert Walton says OPAL alliance had asked council to ban leachate from privately owned landfills from being treated at county owned treatment plants. He adds under the new policy liquid waste generated outside of Oxford and liquid waste from privately owned and operated landfills will not be accepted at Oxford County owned treatment plants. Walton says OPAL was happy with the new policy.
