The County has approved a new Shelter Plan after 1500 applicants were waiting for social housing units in Oxford at the end of last year.
OXFORD COUNTY - Oxford County has approved a 5 year implementation of a 10 year shelter plan. The main goal is create 50 affordable housing units a year until 2020.
Warden David Mayberry says the plan will also look into creating some grants for people in the market for their first home.
"The county would provide funding as it had in the past, to help people buy homes. These would be relatively small investments of $10,000 or something like that."
Mayberry also says they are looking into increasing the number of units in the county that are available for subsidized rent.
The county will be using some money from the provincial and federal government to fund the shelter plan, as well as money made from selling surplus land. Funds from housing reserves will also be used.
As of December 31st 2015, over 1500 applicants were waiting for social housing units in Oxford.
