If you think you pay a lot for your insurance, you might be surprised by how much you also pay for the County's insurance program. Thanks to another 9% increase for 2013, the County will shell out $998-thousand dollars after tax. It's an ongoing problem the County has studied over the last year. They're now looking at moving to more self-insurance, and are putting aside $150,000 next year in an insurance reserve fund, according to Director of Corporate Services, Lynn Buchner. "One of the options was taking a more aggressive self-insurance approach. To do that, we have to have a reserve set up to fund the claims as they come in. And we also have to have an aggressive risk management program in place." That could help drive rates down in the future. The County will covered for up to $25-million in liability protection next year, a limit now employed by half of municipalities in the province. Buchner, tells Heart FM what the County's insurance program covers. "If there's a motor vehicle accident on one of our roads, and we're found to be at fault for some reason, then there's claims for that. Slip and falls on County owned properties, damage to our properties, things like that." Since 2003, the County has processed 109 claims at a total of just over $1.5-million.
