Oxford County Mayor's will be out and about at schools this week. It's the fifth year schools and municipalities will work together to raise civic awareness among Ontario students. Mayor of Woodstock Pat Sobeski says Local Government Week enhances leadership qualities. "If you ask a lot of the existing people who are leaders in the community, often they got involved at a young age: in an association or event that excited them. So that's one of the advantages of going out and speaking to students, is to encourage them to take an active part in their community. There's so many ways they can contribute at a young age," said Sobeski. Tillsonburg Mayor John Lessif says students might even be attracted to future work with their municipality. "Maybe one day they might entertain going into employment as a municipal staff person or one day running for an elected position," said Lessif. The week is meant to refresh students on the local government as the Ontario curriculum only addresses it in grades 5 and 10.
