What will it take to get kids and teens to wear a bike helmet? That's what police are wondering today, after a 12-year-old girl was seriously hurt in Woodstock last night. She was hit by a car at Simcoe and Broadway, around the dinner hour. Police say she failed to stop for a stop sign, and wasn't wearing a helmet. She ended up breaking a leg and suffering head injuries after hitting the windshield of the car and landing on the road. Woodstock Police Constable Steve McEwen says the case should serve notice to cyclists that they have to drive defensively and predictably. "It's a terrible thing that happened and it just goes to show the importance of following the rules of the road. Wearing a helmet is the number 1 thing...in a crash between a bike and a car...the car will always win." McEwen says riding without a helmet carries a fine, but police are often reluctant to issue tickets to minors. "I don't know if that's the approach we need to take? It's a $65-fine for not having a helmet on (if you're under 18), it's really a simple thing to do...to wear it. All I can do is encourage people to do that."
