A highly regarded lawyer in Oxford had his second court date today. Brian Crockett was one of the Crown attorneys involved in the conviction of Michael Rafferty. But back in August he was charged with impaired driving and failing to provide a breath sample. It started with a fire call in Woodstock's north end. Police determined the driver of a pickup truck was trying to reverse his vehicle from a walking trail entrance when it got stuck in a ditch. A small grass fire ignited from the revving engine. The Crown has proceeded summarily in this case, meaning Crockett does not need to be present. His lawyer Kevin McHugh is appearing for him. October 2nd is the next court date. "We will hopefully have completed review of the disclosure on that date and Mr. Crockett will give me some instruction as to what to do on that day. It's set to be the day to resolve on that day," said McHugh. Manitoba prosecutor Chris Vanderhooft has been brought in to try the case, to eliminate any perceived bias. The Attorney General's Office tells Heart FM that Crockett is currently on leave, and are not discussing the matter further, calling it a "human resources matter."
