CRTC Updates Definition for Canadian Radio Content

The CRTC has updated its commercial radio policy, which means more songs will now be considered Canadian content.

CANADA - Changes are on the horizon for radio stations across Canada.

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) has updated its commercial radio policy, which includes new criteria in order to determine if a song is considered to be Canadian content. Officials say the new criteria will have a broader scope, which means more songs will now become eligible.

Chairperson and Chief Executive Officer Ian Scott says this is great news for Canadian artists and broadcasters.

"The radio industry is in a transition period and is competing with digital services for listeners. A flexible approach will help it remain competitive while ensuring that Canadians continue to have access to the content that serves their needs and interests. Radio is a very important medium to entertain, inform, discover new artists and ensure that local voices are heard."

All commercial radio stations in Canada must meet the 35 percent Canadian content requirement each week. Under the updated policy, stations must also meet a new five-percent song requirement for emerging Canadian artists.

The CRTC is also expecting commercial radio stations to play Indigenous music and report the amount of content aired. A new Indigenous broadcasting policy is currently in the works and it's being co-developed with Indigenous Peoples of Canada.
