CUPE to Host School Reopening Discussion in London Today

Frontline education workers in the TVDSB and LDCSB will meet in London today to talk about their experiences working during the pandemic and to brainstorm ideas on how to open schools safely this fall.

LONDON - The union representing education workers in the Thames Valley District School Board and the London District Catholic School Board is meeting today in London to discuss a safe school reopening.

CUPE leaders, education assistants, custodians, early childhood educators, librarians and secretaries will share their stories of working during the pandemic last year. At Thames Valley District School Board, CUPE 4222 represents nearly 1600 custodians, maintenance workers, printers, technicians, warehouse, office and clerical workers, and early childhood educators. CUPE 4186 represents 1000 members at London Catholic District School Board.

President of the Ontario School Board Council of Unions Laura Walton says front line workers should have a say on how to return to school safely.

"Education workers have deep knowledge and unparalleled skills when it comes what students need and the ways that schools work. We've supported students, schools, families and communities throughout the pandemic; our input is critical to a safe September. We want to make sure we're doing our part to make schools safe places to learn and work again."

She says schools need better ventilation standards, smaller class sizes, and a provincial cleaning standard.

"We will be discussing these and other issues to ensure that health, safety and the quality of students’ education are prioritized again in schools in London."

They will be sharing the results of this brainstorming session with the local public health units, the education minister and the premier.
