Curl for Safety Bonspiel Gets the Greenlight

The Curl for Safety bonspiel will be happening at the Woodstock Curling Club on Saturday February 19th and all of the proceeds will be going to MySafeWork.

WOODSTOCK - The Curl for Safety bonspiel hosted by Mazur Safety Inc. is back on, with Ontario set to reopen.

The popular bonspiel is happening at the Woodstock Curling Club on February 19th and they have a couple spots open if more teams want to sign up. Wes Mazur says members of Team Hollie Duncan will be on hand volunteering, and you can even pay to have them a take few shots for you.

"They are Team Ontario in the National Scotties Tournament of Hearts, which starts later this week, so this is the creme de la creme of curling tournaments and they have the privilege of attending and representing us as Team Ontario."

The team is based out of the Woodstock curling rink and features second Rachelle Strybosch, who is still an active member of the club. Rachelle will be at the bonspiel for certain, along with another team member.

Mazur says they have 12 teams signed up, with room for a couple more.

"We are sort of reaching out to see if anyone else wants to come out and enjoy. During these difficult times of partial shut downs, it is a great chance to get out and have some fun, we will be following all of the safety protocols and you don't need to have any experience curling, hence why I will be curling in the event myself."

This is the second annual bonspiel and this year's charity will be MySafeWork, a charity dedicated to making workplaces safer for everyone. The cost per team is $300, there will be lunch and dinner provided for every curler and volunteer. The bonspiel will have 2 matches for each team, with 6 ends per match and vaccination rules do apply.

Mazur explains why they chose MySafeWork as the charity of choice this year.

"It's been around for a while, MySafeWork's story is, at the age of 18 a young man named David Ellis was killed in an industrial workplace accident he was given very limited training and no supervision. It was only his second day on the job and after his death his father Rob Ellis started MySafeWork which is the non profit organization and the registered charity. MySafeWork's mission is to prevent people from getting killed, injured, and harassed on the job and they're committed to creating a social movement against unsafe work through education and empowerment and at the same time they go around and they inspire companies to establish a very strong safety cultures through employee engagement."

All the proceeds will go towards MySafeWork. The bonspiel will be on February 19th with four spots left. For registration and inquiries, email office@mazursafety.com. They are also looking for corporate sponsors. You can email Wes to see how you can help.
