Cyber Attack Has Not Stalled The City Of Woodstock

Woodstock City council's email servers continue to be down following an apparent cyber attack. Staff are doing extra duties and are making sure everything is operational.

WOODSTOCK - The City of Woodstock is still feeling the effects of an apparent cyber attack.

Mayor Trevor Birtch addressed the situation just before a Woodstock City council meeting last night.

As of right now, he says their email server is still shut down.

"Right now staff have been doing an excellent job making sure that all of the city services continue as normal as possible, we have all of our people on the ground making sure that all the programs run normally. Still, we're at a situation right now where all of our systems are not quite operational yet, so email is not up at this point in time but we'll continue to keep the public updated and again reassurances that it's business as normal in the city of Woodstock."

Mayor Birtch thanked staff for how great of a job they're doing during this time, including their administrative department.

He says so many staff are doing extra duties and are making sure everything is operational.

"Our administrative team in the IT department, they are working lots of extra hours and are a great job. Everyone is holding up very well."

He says city staff can still be contacted by phone or in person at all of their facilities and their emergency services through the Woodstock Police are also working.

A similar cyber attack hit two rural hospitals last week in Listowel and Wingham, in addition to cyber attacks on the City of Stratford and City of Owen Sound. The City of Stratford had to pay a ransom of $75,000 in bitcoin in order to have everything operational.

He adds they'll provide more information to the public once it becomes available.
