Damian Warner will return to London with a gold medal after winning the decathlon today. He also set the Olympic record with 9,018 points in the end.
TOKYO/LONDON - Damian Warner has become the first Canadian to ever win gold in an Olympic decathlon.
The 31-year-old from London won the gold medal in Tokyo earlier today, after he wrapped up the 10-discipline event with a fifth-place finish in the 1,500 metres.
Warner broke the Olympic record in the end with 9,018 points, becoming the fourth man in history to ever top the 9,000 mark.
Warner also has strong ties to Woodstock and Oxford County. MP Dave MacKenzie is the great grandfather to his son Theo and and City/County Councillor Deb Tait is his partner's aunt. You read more about that online here.
Team Canada has now secured 18 medals in Tokyo so far; five gold, five silver and eight bronze.
