DART Oxford will kick off Black History Month with a facilitated conversation with Huffington Post writer Jeff Perera.
OXFORD - A special guest speaker is coming down from Toronto to speak at an event hosted by the Domestic Abuse Resource Team (DART) of Oxford County and the Oxford Caribbean Canadian Association (OCCA).
Jeff Perera will speak on February 1st to kick off Black History Month, continuing the conversation that Jackson Katz started back in November.
According to Manager of Programs and Outreach with Ingamo Homes Joanna Piatkowski, Perera contributes to the Huffington Post and has multiple TED talks.
"Jeff speaks a lot around gender, masculinity, his talks discuss healthy versus harmful ideas of manhood, race/gender, empathy building, and helping men end gender-based violence."
The event will not just be a lecture. Instead, it's being labeled as a facilitated conversation, where the audience is encouraged to ask questions and take part in a discussion.
"It's really going to be an open form for us to ask questions. Ask those hard questions that sometimes we might feel uncomfortable asking. We are trying to ensure that people feel as though they can ask questions and not feel like they have to be silent or not know what to say so therefore they're not saying anything at all."
The doors of Goff Hall will open at 5:30 p.m. with the discussion starting one hour later. Piatkowski estimates that the event will take upwards of 90 minutes. She added that they're hoping for a great turnout.
"We're just hoping that we really do have an array of the community attend. It is open to everybody, it's not just for a professional audience, it's truly for the entire community so we hope that everyone is inspired and wants to attend and participate in these really important discussions."
The event is open to the public and donations will be accepted.
