A Fanshawe Graduate has won Newcomer of the Year at the 2015 Canadian Hairdresser Mirror Awards.
TORONTO - A Woodstock Fanshawe College Graduate from the Hair Styling Program is turning heads after winning the Newcomer of the Year Award at the Canadian Hairdresser Mirror Awards.
It was the 21st time the awards were held in Toronto but Dustin Schumann thought it was a once in a lifetime opportunity. "All of the socialites of Canada were all there. I already felt like I was in the winning game because people who have been my mentors - I finally got to meet them in person and introduced myself to the creative wonders of Canada. It was super exciting I was prepared, ready, and happy."
Schumann, a 2014 Woodstock Fanshawe College grad, commented the attendance at the ceremony was filled with industry leaders he has looked up to even before he was a hair stylist. "Where my heart began for the hairstyling world was when I started modelling. I really just saw my passion in hair. I grew to love it throughout time, so I just had to go to hair styling school and experience it for myself."
It was the first time Schumann has ever won a national award, and according to the award winner he wasn't nervous leading up to the announcement. He told Heart FM what he is hoping people will remember him for. "My legacy are my photo shoots and it will be my name being at runways, so that one day people will be able to look me up and remember the creative work that I have done in the past. That is what I am really looking forward to it." Schumann was in the running with 4 other people but ultimately he took home the high honour. He hopes this is the start of a long, successful career in the hair styling industry.
